The WB-1010 Concept 2094 By Reindy Allendra
The WB-1010 aircraft from designer Reindy Allendra is an entry to the KLM Indonesia aircraft design competition. Looking 85 years into the future, the concept aims to solve the transportation needs for a world with a crowded population. The concept was designed on the belief that while materials and technology for aircrafts will be a lot better and more advanced in the future, the design and flight principles will not be altered drastically. That is, the future aircraft will be similar in design to present day aircrafts, only a lot faster and with better technology.
Going by the current trends in population growth, it can be expected that the world will be a crowded place in the next 85 years. Major air routes will have an extremely high volume of traffic, and will thus need larger, more comfortable, and still have to maintain compactness in its structure.
The WB-1010 will be able to seat more than 1500 people, and be able to reach a speed of nearly 1000 kmph. This giant plane’s body will be made of a material similar to GLARE used in the Airbus A380, with Helium injected inside the body to make the airplane lighter, all windows on the other hand, will be made of “smart glass.” Though the aircraft will be able to harvest wind energy, it will mainly rely on conventional fuel as the main energy source. A robotic extractable stand at the plane’s belly will help the plane during landing, and working in conjunction with a super jet, the WB-1010 will be able to land vertically, without the requirement of a runway.
