World’s Largest Solar-Powered Boat Unveiled

At 31m long, the world’s largest solar-powered multi-hulled vessel has been unveiled. The catamaran, dubbed PlanetSolar, is expected to produce up to 103.4KW of solar power to drive its engine which needs just 20KW to achieve a speed of about eight knots.

PlanetSolar introduces solar cells to its green catamaran

SunPower Corp., a solar panel manufacturer has proclaimed that it will lend its solar cells a next-generation catamaran made by Geneva, Switzerland-based PlanetSolar. Presently under construction, SunPower’s high-efficiency solar cells will power the silent, pollution-free vessel that will run on an electric engine. The catamaran will embed 38,000 solar cells in itself, which will result in generating 124 kilowatts of energy. The cells are capable of converting 22 percent of the sunlight into electricity.

Eco Factor: Solar-powered catamaran to go around the world in 120 days.
The U.N. estimates that shipping accounts for over a billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which is double that of aviation. In an effort to promote the feasibility of solar energy in shipping, a group of Swiss and German engineers are building a new solar-powered catamaran dubbed PlanetSolar. The catamaran will be taken on a world tour in the beginning of 2010, a journey that’s expected to last four months.
