Hydrokultur’s Nios Car

The winner of the ‘Autodesk Design Award’ for its outstanding design and ergonomics in the “Urban Concept Cars” category of the 2010 Shell Eco Marathon, Hydrokultur’s Nios concept is fully working prototype of a hydrogen-fueled city car. Coming out as a result of collaborative efforts from the students and professors at three German universities and colleges, this 3.20 meter long and 1.28 meters wide eco-car has an ample space for two people, seated in tandem arrangement.

The eco-car that is made of 70 percent renewable materials has extra space for luggage trimmed to keep the weight as low as possible and keeping in mind the same, its stylish interior has even been designed light, airy and comfortable. Apart from these, Nios is based around a wooden frame that making an oval shape around the passenger cabin, providing not only the good looks but also roll-over protection for the occupants and a secure base for the suspension and powertrain components.

The wooden frame merely weighs 18.5 kgs whereas the total weight of the vehicle is 160kgs. Equally impressive, however, is its economical fuel consumption that makes the car run around 500Km on a single liter of fuel, thanks to DC electric motor which is powered by an advanced hydrogen fuel cell system developed at the Technical University of Chemnitz.
