Abu Dhabi set for introduction of Personal Transit ‘Podcars’
Later this year, Abu Dhabi will get a transport system that could revolutionize public transport and bring another sci-fi concept to the real world. We’ve seen many designers conceptualize such podcars, but the tripping factor always has been the vast requirement for infrastructure and the investment such a project would demand.
Abu Dhabi’s upcoming Masdar City, is sort of free of these limitations. Money and investment aren’t much of a problem, the political leadership is willing to try things out, and as the city is currently being built, there won’t be much problem in creating the infrastructure. The automobile free city will get a PRT, or a Personal Rapid Transport for ferrying commuters.
These driverless pods designed by Zagato will offer clean transport for the city. Tracks will line the city like roads, and we’re well on the way to transport of the future! While no vehicles will be allowed inside the city, it will have multi-storey parking for vehicles that people can use once outside the city.
These are awesome! When I saw the title and the first photo, I thought Podcars would be small and only one or two would fit in. Turns out I was wrong. I like the idea of these, because not only are they clean and efficient, they’re one step closer to what can be our automobile future.
